Meet the muleteers, then load our luggage. We begin our climb to the refuge, following the canals that irrigate the terraced crops. We discover the agricultural traditions of the Berber mountain people. The irrigated terraces rise very high up the valley slopes. The upper canal (targa) forms an almost rectilinear boundary between the brown of the mountain and the green of the crops; The villages are built above so as not to lose a single acre of fertile land. After the lunch break at the foot of the village of Sidi Chamarouch, the mountain becomes barren, and only the bleating of goats and sheep tended by young shepherds punctuates your walk. Overnight at the Toubkal refuge at 3,210 meters.

The early morning ascent of North Africa’s highest peak is without major difficulty. A stony path climbs through scree and then into a more steep-sided valley littered with large boulders. The final ridge is wide and gradually slopes down as you approach the highest point. From the summit, the view is breathtaking, overlooking a large part of the Atlas Mountains and the plains of Haouz to the north and Ouarzazate to the south. Depending on conditions, the descent is made either by the same route or on the northern slope. After tea and lunch, we resume our descent to Imlil.
