Tarkeddit Plateau — Crossing the Mgoun — Izabine sheepfolds
Early morning departure to reach the long ridge of Ighil Mgoun, which we will follow to the summit at 4,068 meters. This limestone mountain,
rich in shells, contains numerous fossils along its ridge. Exceptional views of the entire central High Atlas and, to the south, the Dades Valley,
the Saghro, and the Hamada of Draa. Descent to the Oumsoud Pass to reach the bivouac near the Izabine sheepfolds (2600m). A magical, western setting.
For those who do not wish to make the climb, there is the option of following the muleteers, who go directly to the camp.

Imlil – Toubkal Refuge
Meet the muleteers, then load our luggage. We begin our climb to the refuge, following the canals that irrigate the terraced crops.
We discover the agricultural traditions of the Berber mountain people. The irrigated terraces rise very high up the valley slopes.
The upper canal (targa) forms an almost rectilinear boundary between the brown of the mountain and the green of the crops;
The villages are built above so as not to lose a single acre of fertile land. After the lunch break at the foot of the village of Sidi Chamarouch,
the mountain becomes barren, and only the bleating of goats and sheep tended by young shepherds punctuates your walk.
Overnight at the Toubkal refuge at 3,210 meters.
5-6 hours walking · +1200m
Ascent of Toubkal (4,167 m) – Imlil – Marrakech

littered with large boulders. The final ridge is wide and gradually slopes down as you approach the highest point. From the summit, the view is breathtaking,
overlooking a large part of the Atlas Mountains and the plains of Haouz to the north and Ouarzazate to the south. Depending on conditions, the descent is made
either by the same route or on the northern slope. After tea and lunch, we resume our descent to Imlil. The minibus awaits us in the village to take us back to Marrakech.

Frequently Asked Questions
Some answers before you goThis trek is rated as challenging, involving long days of walking (5-9 hours) with significant elevation gains and losses. Participants should have previous mountain hiking experience and be in excellent physical condition. The ascents of both Toubkal (4,167m) and Mgoun (4,068m) require good fitness and acclimatization. For more information about preparing for high-altitude adventures, check out our Complete Guide to Traveling and Exploring Morocco.
These months offer the most stable weather conditions in the High Atlas Mountains. Winter brings snow and ice, making the high passes dangerous without specialized equipment. Summer offers warmer temperatures and generally clear conditions, though afternoon thunderstorms can occur. The shoulder seasons (May-June and September-October) often provide ideal trekking conditions with comfortable temperatures. For detailed safety information about mountain travel in Morocco, visit our Morocco Safety Guide.
Mgoun offers a unique ridge walk experience rather than a straightforward summit climb. The long limestone ridge contains numerous marine fossils, evidence of the area's geological history when it was underwater. The views from the ridge are spectacular, offering 360-degree panoramas of the entire Central High Atlas. Unlike Toubkal's more direct ascent, Mgoun requires traversing a significant distance along an airy ridge, making it a particularly memorable mountain experience.
Regular cardiovascular training in the months before departure is essential. Focus on building endurance for consecutive long days of hiking with significant elevation gain. Hill walking with a loaded backpack is highly recommended. Break in your hiking boots thoroughly before the trip. If possible, include some high-altitude hiking in your preparation. A detailed equipment list and training recommendations will be provided upon booking.
Accommodation varies throughout the trek. You'll stay in mountain lodges in villages, the famous Toubkal Refuge (dormitory-style), and camping in remote areas during the Mgoun section. All camping equipment is provided including quality tents and sleeping mats. The combination offers both comfort where available and authentic mountain experience in remote areas.
Yes, this trek reaches significant altitudes (over 4,000m). The itinerary is designed to allow for proper acclimatization with gradual ascent and nights at intermediate altitudes. However, altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness level. It's important to stay hydrated, maintain a steady pace, and communicate any symptoms to your guide immediately. Those with pre-existing medical conditions should consult their doctor before booking.
